Mahmoud Khayami Decorated

Mr. Mahmoud Khayami, a well-known philanthropist and Honorary Chairman of Encyclopædia Iranica, has received the Order of CBE (Commander of the British Empire) from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth of Great Britain in recognition of his many educational and philanthropic services.

Mr. Khayami has been very active in the field of education at different levels and places.  Since the year 2000 he has founded 21 pre-college schools providing a combination of teaching and work experience, and 10 elementary schools in Mashhad, the capital city of Khorasan Province, as well as in some sub-provinces of Khorasan. These schools are provided with the latest and the most advanced facilities, such as workshops and laboratories.

Mr. Khayami’s efforts towards training of students and advancing knowledge are not confined to Iran.  In England, the country of his residence, he has established two academic institutions in Sheffield Park and in Sheffield Spring, both in the industrial city of Sheffield.

Mr. Khayami was the Founding-Director of Iran National, the largest industrial complex in Iran, which built automobiles both for the internal market, and for export to some of the neighboring countries.

While primarily an industrialist and a businessman, Mr. Khayami is also a connoisseur and collector of Persian art and an avid reader of Persian poetry and other literary works, knowing surprisingly many poems by heart.

For many years he has been trying to bring representatives of the Abrahamic religions together in an effort to create cooperation and interaction among them to promote peace. In this connection he has met with both Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI.
