AZDĪ, MOḤAMMAD B. RAWWĀD, a notable of Azarbaijan at the beginning of the 3rd/9th century, known mainly in connection with the revolt of Bābak, the leader of the Ḵorrami movement.

According to the Fehrest, Bābak was in Ebn al-Rawwād’s service in Tabrīz for two years between the ages of sixteen and eighteen. Probably a variant of this, cited by Ṭabarī, says that Bābak’s mother was a servant of Ebn al-Rawwād. Ṭabarī also refers to Wajnāʾ b. Rawwād, probably Moḥammad’s brother, and to the rostāq of Dāḵarraqān, i.e., Dehḵᵛāraqān (see ĀẔARŠAHR) to the east of Lake Urmia, as “the belād of Moḥammad b. al-Rawwād.” Yaʿqūbī mentions Ebn al-Rawwād as one of the Azarbaijani notables who helped the caliph’s forces against Bābak in 206/821-22.
