EḤTEŠĀM-AL-DAWLA, ḴĀNLAR KHAN

EḤTEŠĀM-AL-DAWLA, ʿABD-AL-ʿALĪ MĪRZĀ, also known as Eḥtešām-al-Molk and Moʿtamed-al-Dawla, second son of Farhād Mīrzā Moʿtamed-al-Dawla Qājār (1233-305/1818-88). He seems to have belonged to Nāṣer-al-Dīn Shah's inner circle (Eʿtemād-al-Salṭana, Rūz-nāma-ye ḵāṭerāt, p. 493). The first and last government appointment he held was the governorship of Zanjān and Ḵamsa in 1309-10/1891-93, for which he reportedly had spent 15,000 tomans (about ₤ 3,950). He, however, lost this position after a few months because of a conflict with the tribal chief Jahānšāh Khan Amir Afšār of Ḵamsa. He later became a member of the state Consultative assembly (Dār-al-Sūrā-ye kobrā). While some considered him frivolous and without princely manner, others remembered him as self-satisfied and arrogant. He was well-educated and is known to have written poetry under the pen-name (taḵallos) ʿAbdī. He collected his father's papers, now preserved in Mahmud Farhād Moʿtamed's collection of manuscripts (Afšār, pp. 404-9). The dates of his birth and death are not known.
