BĀBAY OF NISIBIS

BĀBAY OF NISIBIS

Christian Syriac writer who flourished about the beginning of the seventh century CE; a homily of his is attested in Sogdian.

BĀBAY OF NISIBIS (BĀBAY BAR NṢIBNĀYE), also known as Bābay the Less, Christian Syriac writer who flourished about the beginning of the seventh century CE. He was the author of a number of hymns and poems, almost none of which have been published. A Sogdian version of one of his works, a metrical homily “On the Final Evil Hour,” is partially preserved in the manuscript C2 (see Sogdian Literature, Christian). The Sogdian translation is of particular importance, since the Syriac original is not known to be extant.
