AFIFI, RAḤIM

 

AFIFI, RAḤIM (b. Shiraz ?/ d. Teheran 1375 Š./ 1996), scholar and author. He completed his primary education in Mašhad and his higher education in Tehran. He graduated from the University of Tehran with a doctorate in literature in 1338Š. / 1959 and joined the University of Mašhad as an associate professor specializing in Pahlavi in 1341Š. /1962. He retired from his academic teaching post soon after the Revolution of 1979 and spent the rest of his life in Tehran. He is the author of lexical guides and handbooks of mythology and edited Ardā Wirāz-nāmag (see ARDĀ WĪRĀZ), the important lexicographical work, Farhang-e Jahāngiri, one of the most authoritative dictionaries of the Persian language, composed in India at the beginning of 11th/17th century, and the verse epic Bahman-nāma.
