Professor Ehsan Yarshater

Dr. Mandan Zandian presenting her bookA special session of the Seminar on Iranian Studies in Persian convened on Friday, 6 May 2016, celebrated the launch of the newly released book on the prolific life and multifaceted lifetime contribution of Professor Ehsan Yarshter. The book, entitled Ehsan Yarshater in Conversation with Mandana Zandian, comprises of the transcripts of a series of interviews conducted over the course of the past two years. 

Professor Ahmad Ashraf called the meeting to order in a brief welcoming note. Next, Houra Yavari introduced the interlocutor, Dr. Mandana Zandian, and provided the audience with a short synopsis of the themes and topics covered in the volume, as well as the range of Professor Yarshater’s interests and achievements as a highly distinguished and visionary scholar.

In her talk, Dr. Zandian elaborated on the unique opportunity to interview Professor Yarshater. A feast of myriad accomplishments in the face of innumerable vicissitudes, as Dr. Zandian held, Professor Yarshater’s long life is a remarkable lesson in resilience and dedication, the fruits of which are evident in nearly every facet of the field of Iranian Studies, above all in the Encyclopaedia Iranica, variously called a “treasure-house of accurate and reliable information regarding the Iranian world,” “the greatest academic project of the 20th century concerning the Middle East,” and a “masterpiece.” Dr. Zandian’s talk was followed by a PowerPoint presentation highlighting noteworthy snippets of her interviews and questions and answers.



Dr. Zandian is a published poet, author and journalist, and serves as a member of the editorial board of Rahavard Quarterly Journal. She also collaborates with Homa Sarshar in her weekly radio broadcasting programs. A graduate of Shahid Beheshti Medical School in 1997, Dr. Zandian is currently engaged in research on aggressive types of advanced cancer in Cedars Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles.
