Muhammad Dandayev (1828-2017)We have learned, with the deepest regret, of the passing of Muhammad Abdulkadyrovich Dandamayev on August 28, 2017.

Muhammad Dandamayev was born on September 2, 1928 in the village Unchukatl of Daghestan. In 1952, he graduated from the State Pedagogical Institute of Leningrad, Historical Faculty. During 1952-1954, he worked as a school teacher in Daghestan; in 1954-1958 he was a post-graduate student at the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in Moscow. Beginning in 1959, he worked at the Oriental Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In 1997 he was elected a corresponding member of the Russian Academy. His main research interests included the ancient Persian empire, history, social institutions and culture of Babylonia during the first millennium BCE.

Muhammad Abdulkadyrovich Dandamayev served ably as a Consulting Editor for our project from its very beginning and as a member of the Advisory Committee since 2000, in addition to authoring over 60 articles for the Encyclopaedia. His passing is a tremendous loss for the Encyclopaedia Iranica as well as the field of Iranian Studies.
