the northernmost and largest of the five traditional Ṭāleš khanates (Ḵamsa-ye Ṭavāleš) in western Gilān. It includes the catchment basin of the river Kargānrud and several smaller streams to its north. In the administrative reform of 1937 Kargānrud became a rural district (dehestān) in Markazi district (baḵš), Ṭavāleš sub-province (šahrestān). In the 1998 reform, Kargānrud became one of the districts of the sub-province of Ṭāleš.
