GANJĪNA-YE FONŪN

GANJĪNA-YE FONŪN, a biweekly magazine published in Tabrīz for a year (1 Ḏu’l-qaʿda 1320-15 Šawwāl 1321/30 January 1903-4 January 1904) by the joint efforts of Mīrzā Moḥammad-ʿAlī Tarbīat, Sayyed Ḥasan Taqīzāda, Mīrzā Yūsof Āštīānī Eʿteṣām (later Eʿteṣām-al-Molk, q.v.), and Mīrzā Sayyed Ḥosayn ʿAdālat, who operated from a bookstore owned by Tarbīat (Ketāb-ḵāna-ye Tarbīat). It was the first scholarly Persian periodical published in Persia. It was handwritten by Eʿteṣām and lithographed. Each issue consisted of four separate sections (jozw) of four pages. Each section, carrying a title of its own, was devoted to a single topic: Ganjīna-ye fonūn, a miscellany of scientific information put together by the founders; Honarāmūz,a scientific, technical treatise compiled by Tarbīat; Tamaddonāt-e qadīma, the translation by Sayyed Ḥasan Taqīzāda of Gustave Le Bon’s Les premières civilisations; and Taḥt-al-baḥr yā safīna-ye ḡawwāṣa, Eʿteṣām’s translation of Jules Verne’s Vingt mille lieues sous les mers.

The magazine had a relatively wide circulation, particularly in Tehran (Taqīzāda, pp. 35-36). The format was 16 single-column pages, measuring 22 x 16 cm written in fine nastaʿlīq script. It carried no pictures. Single issues were sold for 800 dinars and the annual subscription was 15 krans in Tabrīz and 18 krans elsewhere. A complete set is accessible at the Central Library of the University of Tehran; individual issues are also kept at the Majles-e Senā Library and at the ʿAllāma Ṭabāṭabāʾī Library in Shiraz.
