DOḴTARĀN-E ĪRĀN

DOḴTARĀN-E ĪRĀN (lit., “Daughters of Iran”), a monthly variety magazine for girls published in Shiraz from 1 Mordād 1310 Š./23 July 1931 to Āḏar 1311 Š./November 1932. The publisher and editor was “Zand-doḵt Š¨īrāzī” (Faḵr-al-Molūk Zandpūr, 1327-71=1331 Š./1909-52), one of the pioneers in seeking women’s rights in Persia; she founded the Society for women’s revolution (Majmaʿ-e enqelāb-e neswān) and was the first woman in Shiraz in modern times to appear in public unveiled (Roknzāda Ādamīyat, pp. 665-66). The content was varied but generally concerned the life of women. A number of scholars and journalists in Tehran contributed to the magazine, including Ṣadīqa Dawlatābādī, Kāẓemzāda Īrānšahr, Saʿīd Nafīsī, and Rašīd Yāsamī; although the magazine was published for girls, the works of women and girls were rarely included in it.

The title page of Doḵtarān-e Īrān included an epigraph with illustrations of the Ayvān-e Kesrā at Ctesiphon, girls and women in Persian local costumes, an angel with wings spread, and Reżā Shah (1304-20 Š./1925-41). The magazine was typeset in forty to forty-four single-column pages measuring 14 by 19 cm and printed at the Farhūmand-Ḵāvar and Etteḥādīya printing shops in Tehran; it included black-and-white illustrations. The last issue was double, nos. 6-7. An annual subscription cost 30 rials, 40 ( later 50) rials abroad. Scattered issues are available in the central library of the University of Tehran; the library of Princeton University, Princeton, N.J., possesses a single copy.
