DĀD (2)

DĀD, a vocal and instrumental gūša (motif), in reality more of a melodic type than a modal structure. It is played only in the Māhūr modal system (dastgāh), at the beginning of the development section, on the basic Māhūr scale (māya): (A, B), C, D, E, F, G, A, with a slight emphasis on the F and the D. From the modal point of view it consists of the progressive introduction of the notes in the upper register through repetition of small motifs at various pitches. Dād is sometimes preceded by a short introduction (moqaddama-ye dād, radīf of Mīrzā ʿAbd-Allāh, q.v.). The name of this gūša does not appear in either early musical taxonomies (Marāḡī) or in related traditions in Persia.
